Chemistry class

The Gold College of Arts and Sciences gives students the foundation for lifelong professional success and launches their sense of curiosity and engagement in the world.

All Mary Baldwin students gain compelling knowledge in the arts and sciences through the common curriculum, which lies at the core of their overall MBU education.

The arts and sciences provide an understanding of quantitative reasoning, scientific and philosophical inquiry, and intercultural literacy. These areas are supercharged with future-ready skills that employers want in critical thinking, teamwork, research, creativity, expression through digital tools, and a thirst for innovation.

Students find inspiration in collaborating with faculty mentors inside the classroom and beyond. Experiential learning, research, study away and abroad, internships, service, and leadership expand on coursework and prepare students to be strong, ethical leaders in their chosen fields.

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences

With over two dozen undergraduate majors and minors, the school of humanities and social sciences encourages students to ask deep questions about the creation of knowledge, languages and cultures, the institutions and incentives that allow past and present societies to function, the foundations of ethical choices, and the sources of creative processes. The skills developed in humanities and social science courses are interdisciplinary by nature and are transferable to nearly any career pathway.

The School of Science

The school of science formalizes curiosity through research at all levels. Students learn to investigate content, acquire data, and research peer-reviewed publications in order to apply their scientific knowledge to all aspects of life. The intersection of the scientific discipline and the liberal arts allows collaboration through engaging classroom discussion, problem-solving sessions, and labs. This work launches our graduates to be productive citizen scientists in graduate programs and careers of meaningful scientific contribution.

The School of Visual and Performing Arts

The visual and performing arts engage artistic thought and activity to reflect upon, question, and expand creative expression. Empowered by rigorous study of various media — including theatre, music, dance, film, and the visual arts — students in the school of visual and performing arts collaborate to produce ideas and art that embody intelligent inquiry, creative literacy, and ethical practice. As scholars and practitioners, students impact and inspire our diverse community as they prepare to contribute to their own future and varied professions.
