sapersteinLUCIA MORGAN Saperstein ’95 writes, “After spending three amazing years in Sicily, Italy, our family moved to Bethesda, Maryland. It’s been wonderful to re-connect with Mary Baldwin friends and I look forward to meeting up with others in the DC area soon (and at our 20th reunion!). We are enjoying all of the cultural opportunities that DC has to offer and our children, Noah (11) and Camille (8) are thriving here. During our time in Sicily, I recognized a need for cultural programing on the small military base where we were living and began to work on bringing an author to the base school. I wrote grants, led fund raising efforts, and eventually succeeded in organizing a week long author visit that grew to include the entire base community. It was such a positive experience that over the next few years I helped to bring in multiple authors for not only our base in Sicily, but two other American bases in Italy and Spain. Since returning to the States, I have enjoyed working as program coordinator for An Open Book Foundation, a children’s literacy foundation. An Open Book Foundation brings award winning authors and illustrators into inner city schools throughout the Washington, DC area. In addition to participating in interactive author events, each student gets to spend time with the author/illustrator and receives a signed book. One of the highlights of this past year was organizing a visit with NPR correspondent, Cokie Roberts (see attached photo). Ms. Roberts spent the morning at Washington Middle School for Girls where she spoke about her book “Founding Mothers”. It was a wonderful way to celebrate girls, inspiring women, American history, and books! “
