Recent Notions on Paper, an exhibition of figurative drawings by artist Christian Johnson will be on view in Mary Baldwin University’s Hunt Gallery January 15–February 2.
In his artist’s statement, Johnson describes his ongoing interest in working with the human body: “I am concerned with the representation of intimacy and sexuality in relationship to desire and shame as expressed through the language of the body. For me this is a spiritual quest, and my art is both a chronicle and manifestation of this search.”
A New York City artist, Johnson earned his BA in studio art from Principia College and his MFA from the New York Academy of Art. He has exhibited work at Artists Space, Philips de Pury, 147 Bowery, and Tribeca Hall (all in New York City), Union Seminary and St. John’s Cathedral at Columbia University, and at the Maybeck Gallery at Principia College.
A reception for the artist will be held Monday, January 15 at 4:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend. Hunt Gallery is dedicated to the exhibition of contemporary work in all media by regionally and nationally recognized artists. The gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. during the college’s academic year.
