After a nationwide search, Mary Baldwin University has found a new fundraising leader at a vital time for the institution.
David Atchley, who works for Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina, joins the Mary Baldwin executive team on a consultancy basis October 1 and will begin full time as vice president for Institutional Advancement on January 15.
Since 2006, Atchley has served as vice president of advancement, special assistant to the president, and vice president of School of Pharmacy Development at Presbyterian, where he led the second phase of the “Promise and Challenge” capital campaign, with a goal of raising $160 million. Under his leadership, Presbyterian set a record for fundraising in 2007–08 from faculty, staff, and alumni; he oversaw the successful completion of fundraising for renovated science facilities; and he took the lead in obtaining significant funding for the new Doctor of Pharmacy program.
Prior to Presbyterian, Mr. Atchley served as associate vice president for development at Wofford College, his alma mater, in Spartanburg, South Carolina. An entrepreneur and business leader, Atchley worked at GTE Corporation (now Verizon), where he led that company’s wireless entry into the previously untapped public sector and designed new product bundling strategies. He also founded two companies, End2End and Integrated Education Systems, Inc., which provide state-of-the art public safety technology solutions. Atchley’s resume also includes work for Dean Witter Reynolds in California and consultancy work for a diverse range of corporations and government organizations.
“David is an ideal fit for Mary Baldwin University at this time,” said Mary Baldwin President Pamela Fox. “He has the combined experience in fundraising, donor relations, and entrepreneurship that will lead the college toward the successful completion of our campaign and the realization of our strategic plan.”
Atchley arrives at Mary Baldwin on the heels of the college’s most recent update of its strategic plan for 2015, setting sights on enrollment growth and continued academic success, including this year’s launch of four new Schools of Excellence. The Office of Institutional Advancement oversees support of Mary Baldwin’s mission through efforts such as the Annual Fund and Campaign for Mary Baldwin.

We want each and every former, current, and future student of Mary Baldwin to feel valued from matriculation to graduation and beyond.”
Atchley replaces Angus McQueen, who served as interim vice president for Institutional Advancement from August 2008 to July 2010. McQueen remains at Mary Baldwin in a new position as chief information officer.
Atchley and his wife Toni, a teacher of deaf education, have two sons. He has completed 27 marathons and is a dedicated Rotarian and community volunteer.
