Pearce Science Center was the site of the April 6 American Society for Microbiology Regional Conference, which garnered the largest attendance in the history of the Shenandoah Valley Chapter Meeting. Mary Baldwin Baldwin Online and Adult Programs student Nicky Rose won a best poster award for her senior thesis research looking at the effects of lead on the rat brain. Associate Professor of Biology Paul Deeble and junior Sophia Stone presented a poster with co-authors Angela Gupta ’12, April Lao ’11, and Assistant Professor of Chemistry Maria Craig titled “LL-37 and CpG Oligonucleotides Increase Growth, Migration, and Invasion in a Prostate Cancer Cell Model.” Deeble also delivered the keynote lecture at the conference, “A Role for Neuroendocrine and Immune System Factors in Prostate Cancer Progression,” summarizing the work from his recent sabbatical and from that of six Mary Baldwin research students over the last five years. He will next attend the Association of Southeastern Biologists Annual Conference hosted by Marshall University April 13–15, accompanied by research students Stone and Aly Beall.
