Mary Baldwin Theatre Season Concludes with One Act Play Festival

Mary Baldwin University ends its 2012–2013 theatre season with a series of one act plays collectively titled The Play’s the Thing. Directed by Mary Baldwin students, this series will capture the audience with its variety of deeply penetrating and thought provoking stories.

Included in this series are The Insanity of Mary Girard by Lanie Robertson, The Couple by Nicholas Walge, Edge of Ross Island by E. M. Lewis, Godspeed by George J. Bryjak, and The Princess: An Urban Fairytale by Helen Wagner. Each one act play portrays different characters who undergo their own unique forms of betrayal, heartache, and drama. The plays collectively hold common themes of relationships and misfortune. As unforeseen problems occur, the audience has the opportunity to observe how each main character responds to the events.

The Insanity of Mary Girard tells the story of a woman put into an insane asylum by her husband because she was unable to fulfill her marital duties according to society. The Couple introduces a husband and wife whose relationship becomes rocky after giving their child up for adoption.  Edge of Ross Island is about a Portland cop that struggles with her own demons after she fails to stop a man from committing suicide. Godspeed depicts a daughter who struggles to tell her religious mother that she has been sexually abused by a reverend. The Princess: An Urban Fairytale is a comedy about an African-American mother who tells her daughter about her childhood though flashbacks.

Mary Baldwin University graduate students, undergraduate students and male actors from the Staunton community collaborate to make this series a success.
