About Me

I’m the author of The Altarpiece, book one of the Cross and the Crown series.  (find it at www.knoxrobinsonpublishers.com or order a copy from Amazon) .  It’s a Tudor mystery, set in a convent that’s being closed by Henry VIII after his divorce from Katherine of Aragon.  Catherine Havens, a young nun, finds herself caught between her religion and her desires–and the king’s eviction of the women from their convent is not helping her situation!

I’m also the author of seven books of poems, including Home Remedies (LSU), A Witch’s Dictionary (Elixir), Consider the Lilies (David Robert), Double Exposure (Cleveland State), Flow Blue (Elixir).  My newest collection,The Gold Thread, is out and can be ordered directly from Elixir Press (www.elixirpress.com) or from Small Press Distributors (www.spdbooks.org)

A professor of English at Mary Baldwin University in Staunton, Virginia, I hold a PhD in Renaissance Literature and an MFA in Creative Writing.  I have received grants from both the National Endowment for the Arts and the Virginia Commission for the Arts and I’m currently a contributing editor for Shenandoah.  I live outside Lexington, VA, with my husband, Rod Smith.
