For the 2017–18 Academic Year

Welcome to our new academic year at Mary Baldwin University! Our Mary Baldwin family unites this year as a diverse and inclusive community around our university-wide theme of Envision Equity. We live by our commitment to just and fair inclusion for all. An equitable society is one in which all can participate and prosper, therefore we live our inclusivity statement by celebrating humanity in all its complex variation and in sustaining a community where — paralleling the definition of equity — all may flourish.

We welcome all our returning and new students for this important year of turning toward the future following our joyous celebration last year of our distinguished 175-year heritage. We celebrate each student, our building blocks of the future. Mary Baldwin welcomes our first residential men this year as we open the new coeducational University College and strengthen our commitment to the Mary Baldwin College for Women through enhanced programs for women’s leadership. Our community includes our students at the Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences on our branch campus in Fishersville, our graduate students in Shakespeare and Performance and Education, our online and adult students studying throughout the Commonwealth at our university centers, and our newest graduate students in the Master of Business Administration and Master of Healthcare Administration inaugural classes.

We are a student-centered university, living our mission of empowering tomorrow’s leaders, preparing them to be agents of their own destiny to pursue lives of purpose and professional success. We do this through our distinctive academic programs in a vibrant coeducational community in our picturesque Shenandoah Valley. They are agents of change for our university, region, nation, and world.

I encourage our students to take full advantage of all that our beautiful town, featuring what has been rated as one of the top ten idyllic and historic main streets across the United States, and in all the advantages that await within short drives of our campus.  Cheer on our athletic teams!

You have my assurance that we put our students first. We are personal, not transactional. Our faculty expertise comes with an open door. We will assist you in preparing for career success right out of the gate. Our community is a remarkable group of bold, forward-thinking women and men. I am very proud of you and I wish all a successful year filled with the joy of learning.
